On the west coast of Lewis, Uig Sands is situated amongst hilly terrain and dramatic landscapes adorned with islets. Its pristine golden sands hold historical significance as they were once home to the famous 12th-century Viking chess pieces known as the Lewis Chessmen. These intricate works of art found in the local sands can now be found in prestigious museums such as Edinburgh’s Museum of Scotland and the British Museum. Additionally, six pieces are proudly displayed at the Museum nan Eilean in Lews Castle, Stornoway.

Uig is conveniently located 34 miles west of Stornoway, approximately a 50-minute drive away, with the name “Uig” deriving from the Norse meaning “bay.” This coastal gem boasts stretches of Atlantic coastline bordered by wind-swept shifting sand dunes and lush machair grasses.

Accommodation

Uig Sands compromises of 4 luxury rooms overlooking Uig Sands beach on the west coast of Lewis. The rooms offer large picture windows, framing the unforgettable views of Uig Bay. Located just a short walk from Uig Sands restaurant (Open Wednesday – Saturday from 4pm). Each room is en-suite (with shower) and features a fully equipped kitchen and super king bed. A cosy log burners creates the perfect atmosphere for relaxation while enjoying the stunning views. There is a sofa and rolltop bath positioned in the room to make the very best of the stunning views.

A fully equipped kitchen has everything you need to cook your own evening meals, why not pick up some of the amazing local produce and eat out on your own private deck while soaking up the views.

For those preferring to dine out, the onsite restaurant presents a menu curated with fresh and local ingredients in mind. Dishes feature local fish and shellfish sourced directly from nearby waters. The chefs pride themselves on using what the boat has landed that day to ensure freshness. As a result, menus are subject to change daily with each menu finalised shortly before service begins.
