Find true relaxation amidst the stunning coastal beauty at the far end of South Uist.

Polochar Inn – an historic inn at the South Uist waterside.

Located in a breath-taking position, right by the sea at the southernmost tip of South Uist, the Polochar Inn has been awarded 4 stars by VisitScotland. Set on the edge of the coastal machair, this inn boasts close proximity to a stunning sandy beach and offers magnificent panoramic views of Eriskay and Barra. The recent renovation project aimed to retain the inn’s character while adding contemporary finishes to both public spaces and guest areas.

For nature enthusiasts, Eriskay serves as a haven for bird watching and fishermen. Hill walkers and archaeologists will also find much to explore in this captivating location. For cyclists, be prepared for a short but invigorating climb up the hill to reach the ferry. And for those seeking tranquility, there’s nothing like simply sitting and taking in the mesmerizing surroundings.

Off the beautiful shores of Eriskay, lies a tale of resilience and community spirit. In 1941 the S.S Politician tragically sank, leaving its precious cargo of whisky behind. This was a time when whisky was scarce on the islands due to the war. However, the resourceful seafaring community of Eriskay saw an opportunity to salvage this valuable treasure. Thousands of bottles were brought ashore, thanks to the hardy Eriskay ponies – a rare breed with only a few hundred remaining.

This extraordinary event inspired Compton Mackenzie’s legendary book “Whisky Galore,” capturing the imagination and hearts of people worldwide. The story later came alive on the big screen through the renowned Ealing Studios. Today, visitors to Eriskay can witness history first-hand at the Am Politician. Behind its bar proudly stands an original bottle from that fateful shipwreck. It serves as a symbol of resilience, camaraderie, and seizing opportunities even during challenging times.
